Annual Report Sept 2002 – Sept 2003

In keeping with our usual schedule, our first program was the Annual Fall Dialogue, held on November 24th, 2002, at the Beth Tzedec Synagogue. The topic was Jews and Christians: A Journey of Faith -“Looking for Links”. The program consisted of a partial viewing of the documentary film Jews and Christians: A Journey of Faith, followed by refreshments and discussion at round tables. Guest facilitators for the event were Rabbi Moshe Saks, spiritual leader of the Beth Tzedec Congregation, and Dr. Michael Duggan, Associate Professor of Religious Studies, St. Mary’s College. Because there was time for only a partial viewing of the film, participants were offered the opportunity to sign up for a series of 5 workshops that provided a full viewing of the film, followed by discussion.

Our second program was the series of workshops based on the film. They were held on five alternating Sunday afternoons, from January to March at the Jewish Community Centre. Approximately 30 people participated in the series, which was facilitated by members of our CCCJ Board. Discussion was stimulating and informative for all participants.

Unfortunately, we were all shocked and saddened by the sudden illness and passing of our past President, Irving Jacobson, last June. Our condolences were offered to his wife and family, and our summer social event was cancelled out of consideration. He was a long-standing, active member of our Board, Vice- president and President, and his good-natured, amicable participation and leadership will be sorely missed.

Our Fall Dialogue for November 2nd, 2003 is currently being planned. The topic is The Divine Performance: Powerful Words in the Jewish, Christian and Hindu Traditions. Our guest speaker is Professor Tinu Ruparell, from the University of Calgary, where he teaches Comparative Philosophy of Religion, focussing on the Hindu and Christian traditions. We will be inviting members of the Hindu community to join us.

Respectfully submitted by
Rochelle Rabinovitz, Vice-President
