Report: Annual General Meeting 2007

The President of the CCCJ-Alberta, Rochelle Rabinovitz, reviewed past year's events (extracted from them Minutes of the AGM of March 22, 2007

  1. A Shoah (Holocaust) Remembrance Service, organised by Anna Tremblay and held at St. Gerard’s Catholic Church on April 26th, 2006, was co-sponsored by the Roman Catholic Ecumenical Office, Calgary Jewish Community Council and CCCJ-Alberta. Guest speaker was Martin Maxwell, a Holocaust survivor from Toronto. Soloist: Tsipora (Fay Sidorsky).
  2. The Annual Spring Breakfast was held on May 9th, 2006 at the Calgary Jewish Center. Topic: “Redeeming Religion: Recentering the Conversation”. Speaker Prof. Tinu Ruparell, Professor in Philosophy of Religion, University of Calgary. Approx. 60 people attended.
  3. Hal Joffe, lawyer and former Community Relations Director for CJCC gave a very informative talk on “Arab and Muslim Anti-Semitism: the Propaganda of Hatred” at our June meeting.
  4. Discovering Diversity Schools Program. Rochelle Rabinovitz initiated this Toronto-based program in Calgary with great success. School trips to religious venues are continuing as requested by teachers from the Calgary Board of Education and Catholic High Schools. Mrs. Rabinovitz showed the interesting five-minute video used in the program.
  5. The Annual Fall Dialogue was held at St. Gerard’s Catholic Church on Sunday October 29, 2006. A Fall Trialogue – “Living our Faiths in a Pluralistic, Secular, Democratic Society: Religious Expectations and societal Limitations.”
    Panelists were: Rabbi Zeev Friedman, Calgary; Rev. Clint Mooney, Calgary; Imam Hamid Slimi, Toronto. Moderator: Rochelle Wiseman, Calgary. Approx. 80 people attended.
  6. Our monthly meetings were enriched by programs held at different places of worship in Calgary, and included a talk about the various communities. The February meeting was held at St. Peter’s Anglican Church; the March meeting at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. The next venues will be: House of Jacob Synagogue on April 12th, Shepherd King Lutheran Church on May 10th and St. Matthews United Church on June 14. Meetings are at 12 noon, and the program begins at 1:00 p.m.
  7. Multifaith Calendars were sold for the first time to profit the CCCJ-Alberta thanks to the initiative of Robin Slater and the hard work of Dr. Myron Weber and his wife.

New members of the Board of Directors

Rochelle Rabinovitz introduced the new Board Members: Rev. Ray Matheson, First Alliance Church, Calgary, Judy Shapiro, Community Relations Director, Calgary Jewish Community Council, Rev. Brian Way, Anglican Ecumenical Officer, Holy Cross Anglican Church, Calgary.

David Gravells will be the alternate Vice-President and President when either Dr. Doug Shantz, new President, or Dr. Myron Weber, new Vice President, are away.

Upcoming Events

  1. Holocaust Remembrance Services sponsored by the CCCJ-Alberta, CJCC, and the Anglican Diocese and churches will be held as follows: Monday, April 16 at St. Peter’s Anglican Church, Calgary; Tuesday, April 17 at the Anglican Church in Canmore; Wednesday, April 18 at All Saints Anglican Church in Canmore. All services will be at 7:30. (Robin can arrange buses for Canmore). Speaker for Calgary and Canmore will be Peter Silverman, member of the Resistance, who will also speak on the 7 and 8 April at Beth Tzedec synagogue. The title of his talk will be “From Victims to Victors”.
  2. Annual Spring Breakfast will be held on Friday, May 25th at 8:30 a.m. at the CJC. The topic will be “Revelation in Judaism and Christianity”. Speakers: Rabbi Jordan Ofseyer, Beth Tzedec synagogue and Dr. Douglas Shantz, Chair of Christian Thought, U. of C.
  3. CCCJ-Alberta members have been asked to participate in a study on the dynamics of interfaith dialogue, research topic of a grad student working under Prof. Tinu Ruparell in the Religious Studies Dept. of the University of Calgary. Letters requesting your participation will be mailed within the near future, subject to the CCCJ-Alberta Board’s approval.
